Small notes on building things. About

Moving the photo archive off the old NAS

The old two-bay box finally started reporting reallocated sectors, so this weekend went into copying twelve years of photos onto new disks. The slow part was not the copy but the checksums: I wanted every file verified twice before wiping anything. A simple sha256 manifest per year turned out to be the most useful thing I made all month.

A cron job that tells me when the garden needs water

A cheap soil sensor, a microcontroller, and twenty lines of script. It posts a reading every hour and only nags me when the moisture drops below a threshold for three readings in a row. The tomatoes have never been happier.

Notes on static sites

This site is a handful of HTML files and one stylesheet. No build step, no framework. I keep coming back to how pleasant it is to edit a file and have that simply be the website.
